How to Safely Exercise in the Summer Heat

When it comes to exercise, one of the best parts of the summer is that you can do your workouts outside. However, summer weather can get hot. Very hot. It’s important for your health that you take precautions when exercising in summer heat and humidity.

Here are a few ways to make sure you’re safe when exercising in the summer heat.

Drink Plenty of Water

It goes without saying that you will sweat more when exercising in the summer heat. This means you’ll need to replace the fluid you lose by drinking water. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout. In general, it’s a good idea to drink plenty of water throughout the day, not just when you’re exercising.

Wear the Right Clothing

Choose your workout outfit carefully. You’ll likely want to swear something light and loose, and probably in a light colour that will reflect heat. Wearing at hat is also a good idea, as it keeps the sun off of your face.

Choose Cooler Places

When it’s very hot, it’s a good idea to move your workout to shaded areas or locations where there is a breeze, such as near the beach.

Think About Timing

You likely don’t want to exercise outside in the afternoon, as this is usually the hottest time of the day. Instead, try to shift your workouts to mornings or evenings.

Modify Your Workout

You might not be able to do your standard workout if the weather is very hot. Try changing things up. For example, consider doing two shorter workouts (one in the morning and one in the evening) instead of one longer one. You could also try new exercises. A hot summer day can be a great time to incorporate swimming into your routine, for instance.

It’s also important to not push yourself too far. If you feel dizziness, cramping, head aches, or any other unusual aches or pains, it’s time to stop and cool down.

Know When To Take It Inside

There are some days where it just isn’t safe or smart to do your workout outside. Pay attention to the weather report and, when it’s very hot or humid, take it inside.
