Inspired by the Olympics? Use It For Your Workouts!

The Olympic Games are certainly filled with many inspiring moments. It’s thrilling to watch the world’s best athletes compete and watching the games can definitely make you want to up your own exercise game.

Here are a few tips for adding a bit of an Olympic flavour to your workouts.

Try a New Exercise

One of the best parts of the Olympics is that you get to see so many different sports. You might find something that you’ve never seen before! That’s a good opportunity to try out something new! Of course, you won’t immediately become a champion gymnast or world class track star, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add a few new moves to your routines, or a new sport to your schedule.

For example, if you don’t usually swim or cycle, maybe watching these events on TV will inspire you to try these sports out! Take it slow and see if you can get any inspiration from what you see on the screen.

Workout While You Watch

Can’t take your eyes away from the screen? That doesn’t mean that you can’t get in a workout! Whenever there’s downtime on TV (commercials, commentators, introductions, etc.) take this opportunity to exercise. For example, do push-ups during a commercial break or squats whenever athletes are introduced. This will make these moments more fun and interesting for you and they’ll keep you from sitting there like a couch potato.

Compete Against Friends

This is an excellent way to turn the Olympic spirit into a healthy and active lifestyle! Organize a fun competition with your friends, coworkers or family members. Come up with a schedule, pick teams (if you’d like) and make your own “medals” (which can be anything from fake medals to whatever prizes you’ve come up with). Then pick a day to hold your own “Olympic Games.”

Great event ideas include races, obstacle courses, and team games such as soccer. Getting active with friends is fun and it’s much better for your health than meeting up for dinner or drinks.

Sometimes it just takes a little extra push to get yourself to keep going and keep working out. Watching the best in the world compete at their peak can give you the incentive you need to take your workout to another level. Good luck!
