Getting More Fruits and Vegetables in your Diet

Fruits and vegetables are good for your health. They have a lot of nutrients and vitamins, plus, they are filled with antioxidants, fibre and even water. But the reality is that most of us don’t eat enough of them. Canada’s Food Guide recommends that men between the ages of 19 and 50 eat about 8-10 servings of vegetables and fruits each day, while women in this age group should aim for 7-8 servings.

If you’re not getting enough vegetables and fruits, and want to get more, here are a few tips:

Make Them Available

One of the main reasons that a lot of people don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables is convenience. When you have fruits and veggies stored in way in the bottom of your fridge, and bread and chips in an easily accessible cabinet, it makes sense that you’ll choose the bread and chips first, especially when you’re in a hurry. This is especially true since you usually need to wash and/or chop fruits and vegetables before you eat them.

The solution is to make eating veggies and fruits easier and more convenient. Store them in a location where they’re easy to access and wash and cut them in advance so you can quickly grab some when you’re hungry.

Take Them With You

Take a bag or a container of cut fruits and vegetables with you on the go. They’re a great snack for when you’re in the car, or when you’re hungry at work. Having them on hand will also keep you from grabbing a chocolate bar or a bag of chips when you’re looking for a snack.

Mix Them With Your Meals

You can add fruits and vegetables to a wide variety of different dishes. Add sliced or frozen berries to yogurt or cereal, put peppers and mushrooms in your pasta sauce, and make fruit smoothies to sip with breakfast. These are all ways to add some additional goodness to meals that you already enjoy. You can sneak some added vegetables into nearly every meal. If you put them in a recipe that you already like, you’ll get some extra nutrients without even noticing!
