Across North America, temperatures are dropping. When the weather gets cold and the streets fill with snow, it’s incredibly tempting to give up on the gym and spend the night on the couch with a warm hot chocolate. It’s understandable that you don’t feel like going outside when it’s below freezing. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t stay active and even get in a workout all from the comfort of your own home.
Here are a few tips for in-home workouts that are perfect for the winter months.
Many people don’t even consider working out at home because they think they need a complete home gym in order to get an effective workout. The good news is that isn’t true. It’s important to remember is that in-home workouts don’t require fancy tools or expensive equipment. You can get a great in-home workout with just a clear space in your home!
Other In-Home Workout Tips for Winter
Use your Body Weight
You don’t need dumbbells, weights or machines to do resistance training. Body weight exercises are a great way to get in shape at home. Push-ups, tricep dips, plank, burpees, lunges, squats, crunches and a number of other great exercises can be done with nothing but your body weight for resistance. All you need is some space in your living room, den, basement or just about anywhere else in your home and you’re good to go! You can even do a lot of these exercises while watching TV!
Cardio at Home
In addition to resistance training, you can also get a great cardio workout at home. Jumping rope, stair climbing, jogging in place, jumping jacks and a number of other cardio exercises can be done in your own home without much space or equipment.
Stretching
It’s important that you stretch regularly. Stretching before you exercise warms up your muscles and reduces the likelihood of you suffering an injury during your workout. However, do a small warm up routine before stretching as you don’t want to stretch completely cold muscles. Stretching can also improve your range of motion. When you stretch, try to stretch all major muscles groups. Stretch again after exercising.
As you can see, there are a number of in-home workouts that you can do during the cold winter months.
