If you’re looking to get into shape, looking great and feel even better, strength training is an excellent idea. When combined with cardio and other aspects of your workout, strength training exercises help complete your exercise regime.

Some people are intimidated by the idea of strength training. Certain people feel unsure of how to properly train while others worry that strength training will cause them to look “too big.”

Thankfully, strength training doesn’t have to be difficult or confusing. In fact, you can get a great strength training workout at home! You don’t need expensive equipment or a fancy gym to get into shape. Here are a few strength training tips that work for just about everyone.

Make sure that you do a warm up before starting strength training exercises. A five or 10 minute warm up is a great way to get your body ready for strength training. Walking, jogging and jumping rope are all great warm up activities.

Pay attention to your form. Rather than trying to lift very heavy weights, focus on lifting lighter weights with perfect form. Concentrate on slow, smooth and controlled lifts. This will help you avoid injury. In addition, trying to lift very heavy weights when you’re just starting out can leave you discouraged and make you more likely to quit before you see any gains.

You’ll also want to focus on your breathing. Exhale as you lift, push or pull and inhale as you release.

You don’t necessarily need to use weights during your strength training exercises. Squats, lunges, push-ups and tricep dips are just a few strength training exercises that will help you strengthen your body without using weights.  These exercises are great because they don’t require additional equipment. This means that you can comfortably do them at home without issue.

Stay hydrated. Make sure that you have water nearby and that you drink it regularly.

Be sure to cool down afterwards. A few simple stretches can help a great deal. You’ll feel better later on and avoid injury.

Strength training doesn’t have to be intimidating or complicated. There are a number of great ways to incorporate strength training exercises into your workout without the need for expensive equipment or bulky weights.
