Staying Motivated to Exercise
We’ve all been there. You should be exercising but, instead, you’re on the couch binge-watching a TV show. You should have worked out yesterday too, but you were too tired. What you’re suffering from is a lack of motivation to exercise. It happens to nearly everyone at some point in time.
Here are some tips to keep your self motivated to get up and get active.
Review Your Goals
You probably have workout goals. This is a great time to review them. Just looking at your goals again can give you the motivation to keep going. You may also want to consider revising some of your goals. Maybe you weren’t completely realistic when you set them and they need to be changed. Having unrealistic goals can cause a lack of motivation since you simply can’t accomplish what you set out to do. Changing your goals can get you going again.
Do Something Fun
It’s hard to feel inspired to exercise if you don’t like what you’re doing. If you hate running on the treadmill, you’ll probably be able to come up with a million excuses for why you can’t run today. Instead of thinking of exercise as punishment or something that you have to “get through,” why not pick an activity that you enjoy instead?
Switch It Up
Even if you’re already doing an exercise routine that you enjoy, it’s possible to feel bored by it or just get sick of it. If this is the case, why not take the time to come up with a new workout that’s more interesting? Just changing up your routine can motivate you.
Think of Those Around You
Your loved ones can motivate you to keep going. For example, if you’re tired due looking after your children all day, you might find it easier to skip the workout and collapse on the couch when you have a spare moment. This makes sense, but you can also use your children as motivation. After all, you want them to live healthy, active lives, right? Kids learn by example. If they see you exercising, they’ll be more likely to get off of the couch as well. Use this idea to motivate you to keep going.
This works in other scenarios as well. You can motivate yourself to keep going because you want to be healthy enough to dance at your friend’s wedding or because you want to be able to go on a big trip with your spouse. Find situations in your personal life that you can use as motivation.
Get Some Support
A great way to get motivated is by working out with someone else. This is a major reason why personal trainers are so popular. When you work out with someone else, you have someone to push you to keep going. Plus, you’ll also have someone to keep you accountable. You’ll be a lot less likely to skip your 6:30 workout when you have a friend or personal trainer counting on you to show up.
