Healthy Snack Options to Get You Through a Midday Slump

Healthy Snack Options to Get You Through a Midday Slump

Healthy Snacks to Give You Energy to Keep Going

Healthy Snacks

An afternoon slump can leave you reaching for the vending machine or convenience store. However, items like chips, chocolate bars, or candy aren’t the best snack options. Not only are these often high in sodium, sugar, and calories, but they typically lack the nutrition you need to get you through the day.

There are much healthier options if you’re looking for a boost. Here are a few choices that will give you the nutrients and energy you need without adding in excess calories, sugar and salt.

Seeds

Many different types of seeds have vitamins and nutrients to get you through the day. For instance, pumpkin seeds are a good source of iron and zinc, while also being an excellent source of magnesium, phosphorous, and more. Sunflower seeds are rich in vitamin E and a good source of folate.

Nuts & Nut Butter

For those who aren’t allergic, nuts are a good source of protein, carbs, and healthy fats that can give you the slow release of energy you need to stay alert when you need it.

Fresh and Dried Fruit

Most fruits are a good source of fiber and natural sugars, which can boost your mood.

Air Popped Popcorn

Popcorn has quite a lot of fiber, which means it also gives you quite a lot of energy. As long as it’s air popped, it can be an excellent low-calorie snack.

Hard Boiled Eggs

Eggs are packed with protein, and hard boiled eggs are easy to take with you on the go. Eggs are also high in B vitamins, which help break down food for energy.

Cheese

Various different cheeses can be good energy-boosting snacks. For instance, cottage cheese can be an excellent source of protein as well as B vitamins, vitamin A, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and copper.

Yogurt

Yogurt is high in protein, which slows the digestion of carbohydrates, so it gives you more sustained energy. Just try to stay away from yogurts that have a lot of added sugar. Consider sweetening your yogurt with fresh fruit instead.

Hummus and Vegetables

The chickpeas in hummus contain healthy fats that help you avoid blood sugar spikes, giving you more consistent energy. Paired with some fresh vegetables, this can be an excellent snack.
