Making Healthy New Year’s Resolutions You Can Stick To!

Making Healthy New Year’s Resolutions You Can Stick To!

New Year's Resolutions for your health

2019 is here and, for many people, that means it’s time to make New Year’s resolutions! This year, why not resolve to life a healthier lifestyle? Of course, one of the potential issues with making resolutions is that most people break them (or forget about them) rather quickly, and this leaves you feeling discouraged.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! Here are some tips for making resolutions that you’ll have better luck sticking to.

Be Specific

Instead of saying “I want to exercise more” say “I want to get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.” It’s a small difference, but it’s one that matters. When you set a specific goal, you’re able to track whether or not you have achieved it. If you have a vague goal, you’ll never know if you’re actually on track!

Be Realistic

If you’ve never been a runner, it might be unrealistic to vow to run a marathon this February. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t set big goals, but it means you should break them into smaller steps. Instead of saying you’ll run a marathon next month, why not aim for a 5K instead? And perhaps a 10K a little bit down the line? Setting smaller, more realistic goals will keep you from being discouraged and giving up when you can’t hit a big, audacious goal right away.

Keep Track

A good way to stick to your goals is to keep track of  them. For instance, if you want to exercise for 30 minutes a day, write down how much you exercise on a daily basis. You might not always hit your goal, but if you’re writing down your progress, you’ll be able to see how successful you’ve been and this can help motivate you to keep going.

Share your Resolutions

You’ll be more likely to accomplish your goals if you share them with someone else. Tell a friend, family member, or personal trainer what you wish to accomplish in 2019. Sharing your goal will give you extra motivation to achieve it and you’ll probably get some extra encouragement from the person you’ve shared it with!

Modify if Necessary

A lot of people give up on their resolutions because they realize they’ve made a goal that is too tough to accomplish. If you set a resolution, attempt to achieve it, and realize you made an error, don’t quit! There’s nothing wrong with modifying your goal and working towards something new.
