Find your Motivation

If you’re having a tough time getting started, find some things that motivate you. Try to avoid external motivators like how you’ll look and think more about some of the other benefits of exercise.

For instance, you might want to have an easier time playing with your children or you might want to improve your sleep. Those are both benefits of exercising regularly.

Whatever the reasons, use them to motivate yourself to exercise more.

Start Slow

if you’re just starting to get back into a fitness routine, you probably won’t be able to jump right back into what you were doing before. That’s okay! Start slow and work up to where you want to be.

Not only will this help you ease into the process, but it could reduce your risk of injury as well. Plus, it will keep you from feeling overwhelmed by your workouts and motivate you to keep going.

Don’t Let Yourself Get Down

One problem you may face when you’re getting started again isn’t a physical block, but a mental one. You might feel overwhelmed by the idea of working out again. You might also have negative feelings relating to your ability or whether or not you’ll be able to do the workouts you could do before.

Try to change your attitude and how you think about yourself. Instead of thinking “I can’t believe I went so long without working out”, for example, instead say “I worked out for 20 minutes today and I’m going to do 25 tomorrow. That’s progress!”

Schedule your Workouts

If you’ve gotten out of the habit of working out, you’ll need to get back into exercising regularly. It can be tough to do that, so schedule your workouts. Put them in your calendar alongside your chores, tasks, and meetings. This will not only help remind you, but it will prioritize exercise as well.
