Frequently Asked Questions About In-Home Personal Training
Thinking about hiring an in-home personal trainer? Here are answers to the most common questions we receive about our services, pricing, and what to expect.
Pricing & Logistics
How much does in-home personal training cost?
In-home personal training typically costs between $55-85 per session in Canada and the US, depending on your location, trainer experience, and session frequency.
Do I need to buy equipment for in-home training?
No! One of the biggest advantages of working with Fitness on the Go is that our trainers bring all necessary equipment to your home. This includes resistance bands, dumbbells, exercise mats, stability balls, and other tools needed for effective workouts. You don’t need to invest in expensive home gym equipment or worry about storage.
How much space do I need for home workouts?
You only need approximately 6 feet by 6 feet of clear floor space—about the size of a small bedroom area. This is enough room for most exercises including cardio, strength training, and flexibility work. Many clients train in their living room, basement, or spare bedroom.
What areas do you serve in Canada and the US?
Fitness on the Go operates across major metropolitan areas in both Canada and the United States. In Canada, we serve Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, Ottawa, and Edmonton. In the US, we’re available in select cities—contact us to confirm service in your area. We’re continuously expanding to new locations.
Can I share sessions with a partner or friend?
Yes! Partner training is available and can be a cost-effective option. Two people can share a session, splitting the cost while still receiving personalized attention from a certified trainer. This works well for couples, roommates, or friends with similar fitness goals.
Service Details
What qualifications do your trainers have?
All Fitness on the Go trainers hold nationally recognized certifications such as NASM-CPT, ACE, NSCA-CPT, or CanFitPro. Many also have specialized certifications in areas like senior fitness, pre/postnatal training, or sports performance. Every trainer undergoes a rigorous vetting process and carries liability insurance.
How long is each training session?
Standard sessions are 55 minutes, providing enough time for a warm-up, main workout, and cool-down/stretching. This duration has been proven optimal for maintaining intensity while preventing fatigue. Longer 75-90 minute sessions are available for advanced clients or those with specific athletic goals.
Can I choose my trainer?
Yes! We match you with a trainer based on your goals, schedule, and preferences. If you’d like to request a different trainer after your initial sessions, we’re happy to accommodate. The client-trainer relationship is important, and we want you to feel comfortable and motivated.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We understand that life happens. With 24 hours’ notice, you can reschedule sessions without penalty. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice may be charged. Your trainer will work with you to find alternative times that fit your schedule.
Do you offer virtual/online training?
Yes, we offer virtual personal training via video call for clients who prefer remote coaching or live in areas where in-home service isn’t yet available. Virtual sessions include personalized programming, live form feedback, and accountability—all from the comfort of your home.
Results & Effectiveness
How quickly will I see results with in-home training?
Most clients notice improvements in energy and strength within 2-3 weeks. Visible physical changes typically appear around 6-8 weeks with consistent training (2-3 sessions per week) and proper nutrition. However, results vary based on starting fitness level, goals, and lifestyle factors. The key is consistency—showing up for your sessions and following your trainer’s guidance.
Is home training as effective as gym training?
Absolutely. Research shows that training location doesn’t determine results—consistency, intensity, and proper programming do. In-home training actually offers advantages: no commute time, no waiting for equipment, no gym intimidation, and complete privacy. Many clients find they’re more consistent with home training precisely because it removes common barriers to exercise.
Can you help with specific goals like weight loss or strength building?
Yes! Our trainers create customized programs for a wide range of goals including weight loss, muscle building, improved cardiovascular health, sports performance, injury recovery, and general fitness. Your trainer will assess your current fitness level, discuss your objectives, and design a progressive program tailored to you.
What age groups do you work with?
We work with clients from their 20s to their 80s and beyond. Many of our trainers specialize in specific demographics—some focus on seniors and functional fitness, others on young professionals or athletes. Age is just a number; what matters is your readiness to improve your health and fitness.
Do you offer nutrition guidance?
While our trainers can provide general nutrition education and healthy eating tips, detailed meal planning or medical nutrition therapy requires a registered dietitian. We can refer you to qualified nutrition professionals if you need comprehensive dietary support alongside your training.
Comparisons & Alternatives
In-home personal trainer vs. gym membership: which is better?
It depends on your priorities. Gym memberships cost less ($30-100/month) but require self-motivation, commute time, and comfort in a public setting. In-home training costs more per session but includes personalized programming, accountability, convenience, and privacy. Many people who “waste” gym memberships find in-home training more cost-effective because they actually use it consistently.
In-home training vs. online coaching: what’s the difference?
Online coaching typically involves following workouts via an app or video, with periodic check-ins with a coach. In-home training means a certified trainer is physically present, providing real-time form corrections, motivation, hands-on assistance, and immediate program adjustments. The level of accountability and personalization is significantly higher with in-person training.
How does in-home training compare to group fitness classes?
Group fitness classes offer community and lower cost ($15-30 per class), but limited individual attention. In-home personal training provides one-on-one focus, customized workouts for your body and goals, and the ability to work around injuries or limitations. It’s the difference between a tailored suit and off-the-rack clothing—both serve a purpose, but one fits perfectly.
Safety & Accessibility
Is in-home training safe for seniors?
Yes, and it’s often the safest option! Our trainers who work with seniors focus on fall prevention, balance, functional movements, and exercises appropriate for age-related conditions like arthritis or osteoporosis. Training at home eliminates travel risks and allows for use of household furniture for support during exercises. Many seniors find in-home training gives them confidence to stay active.
Can you work with injuries or physical limitations?
Absolutely. Our trainers are skilled at modifying exercises for injuries, chronic conditions, and physical limitations. We work collaboratively with your doctor or physical therapist when needed. Common conditions we accommodate include back pain, knee issues, arthritis, post-surgical rehabilitation, and more. Always inform your trainer of any health concerns.
Getting Started
How do I get started with in-home personal training?
Simply contact us for a free consultation. We’ll discuss your goals, schedule, and location, then match you with an appropriate trainer. Your first session typically includes a fitness assessment, goal-setting conversation, and a sample workout. There’s no long-term contract required—though many clients find packages offer the best value and results.
What should I wear for home training sessions?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing and supportive athletic shoes. Have water available and a towel if needed. Your trainer will handle bringing all the equipment—you just need to show up ready to work!
How often should I train per week?
Most clients see excellent results with 2-3 sessions per week, combined with staying generally active on non-training days. Beginners might start with 2 sessions weekly, while those with aggressive goals might train 3-4 times. Your trainer will recommend a frequency based on your goals, fitness level, and recovery capacity.
